Across the US hundreds of micro-breweries have been sprouting up, each with its own unique flavor and style, and each one expanding the number of beer drinkers. This is due to the ever-expanding universe of beer which now ranges from lagers to stouts, to even ciders. So it's really no surprise that beer signs have become increasingly popular as well, after-all beer drinkers are a proud bunch and want everyone to know they know a good beer when they drink one! But what is the history of beer signs and where did they come from?
Brief History of Beer Signs
Vintage beer signs started as a way for breweries to market their beers to consumers after prohibition. Breweries would often arm sales reps with wood, tin, and even sometimes metal beer signs to distribute to new accounts which would in turn post the signs in the front of their shops, stores, and other establishments which offered their beer for sale. Proudly proclaiming we sell your favorite beer now come and buy it! Over the years, the wooden beer signs become too expensive so they were done away with leaving mostly metal and tin signs. Then, in the 70s neons finally become cost effective enough that breweries started distributing neon signs to their best accounts proclaiming in big bright neon our beers are sold here! Today you still see a mix of metal and neon signs, and even an occasional poster in stores and vintage beer signs are also quite common in homes and man caves. Personalized with your name or gift recipient's name, they make an excellent gift for beer lovers!
