As the warmth and long nights of summer slip through our perfectly tanned fingers, there are some things you need to enjoy while you can. It is officially August meaning in just a few short weeks talks of Autumn and pumpkin everything will be advertised on every surface of every retailer, everywhere. While I love fall and can sing every word of Nightmare Before Christmas, I do recognize that sometimes we get a little too eager about coming seasons. That being said, it is still summer and you still have some time to get to the pool and throw that one last hooray in celebration of this hot season. These are nine summer beers to indulge in before pumpkins take over the world.
Flying Dog Woody Creek White
I’m big fan of Flying Dog, if anything they just have some of the coolest art of any brewery. Considering I have enjoyed every beer I’ve tasted by them, this light and crisp witbier is no different. Refreshing and tasty, this beer has fruity notes, rich with wheat and citrus flavors. With such a light color and invigorating taste, this summer beer is perfect for your afternoon picnic on the beach.
Victory Helios Ale
You have to know this is going to be a delicious summer beer considering it has Helios (Greek mythology personification of the Sun) is in the title. This farmhouse ale from Victory brewing gives hints of earthy, hay flavors like any good farmhouse. Mildly tart, I think Victory Helios Ale would be the ideal beer for grilling up some seafood with friends.
By great chance, I made it out to the CBC in Philadelphia this year and got to taste this delicious bad boy. Created exclusively for the Craft Brewers Conference although had limited distribution through the city of brotherly love, it is the brainchild of breweries such as Sly Fox, Yards, Victory, Troegs, Stoudts, Iron Hill and Flying Fish. With the perfect amount of spice mixed in with complex flavors of pleasant bitterness, this ryebock lager is an exemplary brew (if you can get your hands on it) for lounging in your hammock.
Almanac Tropical Platypus
With a name like Tropical Platypus you know you’re in for a fun ride. This unique American wild ale is a sour aged in wine barrels with tropical fruits such as kiwi, mango, lime, and passion fruit. Of course, rich with fruity notes, this tart ale is a wonderful choice for sunbathing on the beach or laying by the pool.
Ballast Point Watermelon Dorado
Watermelon is a summer staple so why not skip out on the chewing and infuse it with your beer? This distinct double IPA, has the perfect blast of watermelon balanced with the beloved bitterness of a good IPA. With a 10% ABV it is not meant to be chugged but lightly sipped and savored throughout a lazy afternoon. Indulge in Ballast Point Watermelon Dorado when you’re grilling shrimp on the barbie or you’re enjoying some tropical sorbet on your porch.
Shiner Prickly Pear
Okay so I’m biased on this one a little bit but I think we all can agree that prickly pear is pretty dope. Growing up in southwest Oklahoma I was surrounded by the stuff, this fruity beer of course has the the tartness of prickly pear but is also very smooth and easy to drink. Great for walking around a music or arts festival and sipping away.
Creature Comforts Tropicalia
Having an unwavering 5 star rating on Beeradvocate, Creature Comforts Tropicalia is nothing to mess with, like figuratively, you’ll actually want to mess with a lot of this stuff. Another IPA on the list, this brew is superbly juicy. Containing a plethora of flavors, it is a bright mouthful of exciting pineapple, passion fruit, citrus, and mango. This beer is just good for life.
Tree House Eureka with Citra
Finally a blonde ale! This beautiful beer is a gorgeous orange, yellow color and has hints of citrus and grapefruit, so obviously the perfect summer beer. Not only do I love the awesome citrusy tropical flavors in this light ale, I also happen to love the imagery on the packaging that just reiterates the awesome summer vibes. Tree House Eureka w/Citra is an awesome beer to grab after a day of fun in the sun, or before!
Bell’s Poolside Ale
Bell’s Poolside Ale is perfect for exactly what it states, chilling by the pool! Another tasty beer in the fashion of a witbier, this summer ale utilizes flavors of tart cherries and clove. Well stocked with tartness and bitterness it is surprisingly smooth and collides nicely with the yeasty characteristic.
